Philadelphia Cervical Collar: Quick Installation Guide
1. Check size first: Make sure the collar height matches the space from your chin to collarbone. Put a soft thin cloth inside the collar to avoid skin redness.
2. Turn the patient in a straight line: Keep the patient’s head, neck and shoulder in one straight line. Use one hand to hold the head steady, and place the back part of the collar right at the back of the neck.
3. Help the patient lie flat: Keep the neck in neutral position, make the nose point to the belly button. Put on the front part of the collar, and let the patient’s chin sit fully in the front groove.
4. Adjust and fix: Pull the two magic tapes tight at the same time. You should be able to easily put one finger between the collar and the neck. Make sure it does not press the throat or stop normal breathing.
5. Remind before walking: After putting on the collar, let the patient sit on the bed for 3 minutes, then stand by the bed for 3 minutes. Let the patient walk only if no dizziness happens. Stay with the patient the first time he or she gets out of bed.
6. How to take it off: The patient must lie flat on the bed first, then you can untie and take off the collar. Never remove the collar when the patient is sitting.
7. Daily check: Check the skin under the chin, behind the ear and on the back of the head every shift. If you see red skin, move the soft cloth to a new place.
