Abduction Brace Patient Guide
What it does
This brace holds your arm in a safe raised position. It protects your healing shoulder after surgery or injury, so the soft tissue and broken bone will not get pulled or hurt again.
When you need to wear it
After rotator cuff repair surgery
After a dislocated shoulder is reset
For upper arm fractures near the shoulder
After other shoulder operations your doctor tells you about
Safe wearing rules
Wear it for 4 to 6 weeks as your doctor says. Never take it off early on your own.
Move your elbow, wrist and fingers every day. This stops your arm from getting stiff.
Check your skin 3 times a day. If you see red sore spots, numbness or cold fingers, loosen the straps right away.
When you get out of bed, use your good arm to hold the brace first. Do not push yourself up with your hurt shoulder.
When to see your doctor
Severe pain that does not go away
Skin sores or lasting numbness in your hand
The brace becomes too loose or too tight
