Many people feel a sharp pull on their wound when they stand up or cough after a small abdominal surgery or giving birth. Some also feel heavy and weak around their waist and belly after sitting or standing for a long time. The abdominal brace is a very practical little helper for these situations.
It is totally different from a regular tight waist trainer. It is a wide, full elastic band, usually made of soft, breathable fabric. It puts gentle, even pressure on your whole belly, and will not squeeze your stomach so hard that you feel you cannot breathe. The open Velcro design lets you adjust the tightness easily, and it fits well for people of different body shapes.
It works in very useful ways. If you wear it during recovery after surgery, it holds your belly gently when you sit up or turn over. This greatly cuts down the pulling pain on your wound, and helps the cut heal better. New moms can wear it after childbirth to support the loose belly, and it will stop the uncomfortable heavy feeling in the lower belly. Even people who sit at work all day can wear it. It supports your core softly, takes some pressure off your lower back, and keeps your back from getting sore too easily.
It is very easy to put on. Lay the brace flat behind your back first. Line its lower edge up just above your pubic bone, and make sure its top edge does not go over your lower ribs. Stick the Velcro from both sides to the middle. The right tightness is when you can easily slip one finger under the strap, and you can breathe normally without feeling stuffed. Most models are washable, and the soft fabric will not leave red marks on your skin even if you wear it against your clothes.
One thing to remember: it is only a supportive tool, and it cannot take the place of a doctor’s advice. Do not pull it too tight to get faster results, and do not wear it 24 hours a day. Take it off after a few hours, and do some gentle core stretching moves later. This will help the muscles in your belly and lower back get strong again slowly.
