Knee Orthosis

A Simple Guide to Knee Orthosis

If your knee feels wobbly and weak after a ligament sprain or small knee surgery, a knee orthosis is a practical professional brace to keep your knee stable.

It is different from a regular sports knee sleeve. It usually has movable metal hinges or hard support strips. It holds your knee firmly in a safe range of motion, and stops the joint from wobbling side to side or bending too far. It will not lock your knee completely, so you can still walk slowly and do basic daily moves easily.

Wear it during your post-surgery recovery. It helps your injured ligament and meniscus heal steadily, and cuts down the pulling pain. People with old, unstable knee injuries can also wear it, so they are less likely to twist their knee again when walking or doing light exercise.

Use it the right way: slip the brace over your leg, line the hinges up exactly with your knee joint. Stick all the straps tight from top to bottom. The right fit is when you can easily slip one finger under the strap, and your lower leg does not feel numb.

Do not wear it all day. Follow your doctor’s advice to adjust how long you wear it each day. Take it off sometimes to do simple thigh muscle exercises. Strong muscles around your knee will help you recover much faster.
